I am grateful for finitude. Infinity is an abstraction that refers to a potentiality, a mathematical process that however high we count we can always add one more, or in reality that no matter what combinations of matter now exist they can always form new arrangements. But whatever actually exists now is finite, with a definite, limited extension and duration in space and time. This is what Einstein meant when he spoke of the finite, unbounded universe.
The upshot of this for our lives is that everything is limited and temporary. No problem that we face is all-encompassing or permanent, so we can enjoy the good things while they last, and take solace in the fact that the trials we endure will come to an end, and can in fact be the catalyst for change for the better. When one door closes, another opens. Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time, embracing adversity as a pathway to progress.
